Explore Pushkin and Peterhof: Tour Two of Russia’s Most Beautiful Imperial Residences
Pushkin and Peterhof Tour: Discover Two Imperial Masterpieces Near St. Petersburg
Step into the world of Russian royalty with a full-day tour to Pushkin and Peterhof, two of the most magnificent imperial estates located just outside St. Petersburg. This journey offers a captivating look at the opulence, history, and natural beauty that defined the lives of the Romanovs.
Catherine Palace in Pushkin – A Jewel of Russian Baroque
Originally known as Tsarskoye Selo, the town of Pushkin was given by Peter the Great to his wife, Empress Catherine I, in the early 18th century. Over time, it grew into one of the most cherished summer residences of the Russian imperial family. The centerpiece of the estate is the Catherine Palace, an architectural masterpiece designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli under Empress Elizabeth in the 1750s.
With its elegant blue-and-white façade, golden domes, and ornate sculptures, the palace is a prime example of Russian Baroque style. Inside, visitors can explore a series of grand state rooms, including the impressive Great Hall, decorated with hand-carved woodwork, painted ceilings and the ornate floor.
The most famous room in the palace is the Amber Room, often called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Covered in intricate panels of amber, gold leaf, and mirrors, this extraordinary chamber was originally a diplomatic gift to Peter the Great before becoming part of the Russian imperial collection. Looted during World War II, the room was painstakingly reconstructed over 25 years using historical documentation and craftsmanship. Today, it stands as a symbol of cultural perseverance and artistic excellence.
The surrounding Catherine Park spans more than 150 hectares and features serene lakes, elegant pathways, and charming garden pavilions such as the Hermitage Pavilion and the Cameron Gallery, making it a perfect place for a peaceful walk after your palace visit.
Peterhof with 150 fountains– The Tsar’s dream by the Sea
Known as “Russia’s Versailles,” Peterhof was founded by Peter the Great in the early 1700s as a grand summer residence inspired by the palaces of Western Europe. Located on the shores of the Gulf of Finland, this majestic complex showcases the ambition and vision of Russia’s first emperor.
The heart of Peterhof is the Lower Park, home to more than 150 fountains, canals, and sculptural ensembles. At its center is the Grand Cascade, a stunning water staircase that flows from the Grand Palace down to the Marine Canal. Powered entirely by gravity, this engineering marvel operates without pumps and is most impressive during the fountain season from May to October. The centerpiece of the cascade is the Samson and the Lion fountain, symbolizing Russia’s victory in the Great Northern War.
Other highlights include Adam and Eve fountains, Roman fountains and tricky fountains, as well as Monplaisir Palace—Peter the Great’s favorite seaside retreat.
