Tour overview

Yusupov palace

Step into one of St. Petersburg’s most opulent landmarks with our guided tour of the Yusupov Palace. Known for its stunning architecture and rich history, this palace was once home to one of Russia’s wealthiest and most influential noble families.

During the tour, you’ll explore the lavish interiors, including the ornate rooms, grand halls, and exquisite furnishings that reflect the elegance of imperial Russia. You’ll also learn about the fascinating history of the Yusupov family, including story of the assassination of Rasputin, which took place in the palace’s private chambers.

Our expert guides will provide in-depth insights into the palace’s art, architecture, and the intriguing events that shaped its legacy, offering you a unique glimpse into Russian aristocracy and history.

History of the Yusupov palace

Nestled along the Moyka River, the Yusupov Palace is a spectacular example of 19th-century grandeur, renowned for its opulent interiors and fascinating history. Built in the 1770s by architect Vallin de la Mothe, the palace’s interiors were later transformed into their current lavish form in the 19th century, after it became the residence of the Yusupov family. The rooms are a feast for the eyes, with gilded chandeliers, silks, frescoes, tapestries, and exquisite furniture.

Opulent interiors of the palace

Your tour begins on the second floor, where you’ll marvel at the grand White Column Room ballroom, the banquet hall, the charming Green Drawing Room, and the beautifully ornate rococo private theatre. The tour continues on the ground floor, where you’ll discover the fabulous Turkish Study (once Felix’s billiard room), the Prince’s study, and the stunning Moorish Room, among many other rooms rich in history and elegance.

Assassination of Rasputin

The Yusupov Palace, once home to Prince Felix Yusupov, is steeped in history and intrigue, particularly due to the dramatic events surrounding the death of Grigory Rasputin. As the richest man in Russia and a member of the aristocracy, Prince Yusupov’s palace was a hub of luxury and scandal. The murder of Rasputin in 1916, carried out by Prince Felix and a group of conspirators, is one of the most famous episodes in Russian history.

The palace’s basement, where Rasputin was killed, has become an iconic site for those interested in this dark chapter. Visitors can step into the very room where the assassination took place, adding a chilling layer to the palace’s grandeur.
